Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards. And not just a little — full reverse. These tiny creatures, some smaller than your thumb, have ball-and-socket joints in their shoulders. Their wings rotate a full 180 degrees. Most birds push air down and forward. Hummingbirds don't. They tilt their wings and essentially screw themselves through the sky. Imagine twisting your arm in a full circle without wincing. That's their shoulder. The backward flight isn't a party trick. It's a survival skill. Flowers have nectar at the bottom, and tubular blooms curve inward. Reversing out is the only graceful exit. So the next time you see one hovering at a feeder, remember — you are watching a bird fly in a direction physics technically forgot to include. And it never stops being a little bit magic.
