Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night)

Arnold Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), Op. 4 performed live by Sydney Camerata at the Justice and Police Museum, Sydney, Australia

Verklärte Nacht was composed in 1899 over just 3 weeks. It was inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel that describes a man and woman walking through a dark forest on a moonlit night. The woman shares a dark secret with her new lover, that she bears the child of another man.

The work is in 5 sections corresponding to the structure of the poem. This is the original version scored for string sextet (2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos) and Schoenberg later produced an arrangement for string orchestra. It was first premiered in 1902 in Vienna.
