A team of researchers has discovered an ancient form of Egyptian solar power. A very primitive form of solar power, but still, it’s power. The Egyptians were able to use obsidian, which is volcanic glass, with boron, to create simplistic solar cells with hand-drawn copper wiring. These cells could be used for electroplating, which was used to produce metallic coatings to cover statues or jewelry in gold and silver. Basically, a small electric charge was used in a solution to produce the desired metallic coating. It was how ancient people practiced such sophisticated gilding, and how they made cheap nickel statues look like they were made of solid gold.
