Observation: DNA Structure Boxed nucleotide pairs are shown in Figure 12.1a. If you are working with a kit, draw a representation of one of your nucleotides here. Label phosphate, base pair, and deoxyribose or ribose. See Figure 12.1a. Notice the four types of bases: cytosine (C), thymine (T), adenine (A), and guanine (G). What is the color of each of the four types of bases in Figure 12.1? In your kit? Complete Table 12.1 by writing the colors of the bases. The molecules make up the backbone (uprights of the ladder) of DNA (Figure 12.6). What type of bond is in the backbone? The phosphate of one nucleotide is bonded to the sugar of the next nucleotide. Using Figure 12 as a guide, join the nucleotides together with hydrogen bonds. Label the hydrogen bond. Dashes are used to represent hydrogen bonds in Figure 12.1b because hydrogen bonds are weak. In your model, ensure that the bases are always paired. Notice in Figure 12.1b, what molecules make up the rungs of the ladder? Each half of the DNA molecule is called a double helix (Figure 12.6). DNA Replication: The DNA molecule duplicates itself during replication. The complementary base pairing makes replication possible. We will see that there are DNA molecules.
