The eight-minute title track of Steely Dan’s 1977 masterpiece, "Aja," features what is widely considered one of the most legendary drum performances in recording history by session titan Steve Gadd. Tasked with navigating a complex, jazz-fusion arrangement, Gadd delivered a performance so flawlessly technical yet intensely musical that it famously required only two takes. The song culminates in a series of explosive, high-energy drum solos—interspersed with Wayne Shorter’s tenor saxophone—that showcase Gadd’s signature linear phrasing, crisp military-style rudiments, and iconic "Gadd-style" triplets. Legend has it that Gadd was so "in the zone" (and according to producer Gary Katz, somewhat chemically enhanced) during the session that when he heard the playback months later, he didn't even remember playing on the track, famously asking, "Who is that drummer? He’s a motherf*er!"
