Tyr vs. Odin as Chief God

Óðinn (Odin) is clearly presented as the chief of the Norse gods in our surviving written sources from the Middle Ages, but today people often claim that Týr (Tyr) was the Vikings' main god. This video looks at the origin of this misconception, which is based mostly on the roots of Týr's name.

Dr. Jackson Crawford is Instructor of Nordic Studies and Nordic Program Coordinator at the University of Colorado Boulder (formerly UC Berkeley and UCLA). He is a historical linguist and an experienced teacher and translator of Old Norse, Modern Icelandic, and Norwegian.
