Postcard from Carlisle Castle, Cumbria | England Drone Footage

Carlisle Castle remains a dominating presence - a fortress with a long and sometimes grim history, standing proud in the city it has watched over for nine centuries.

Its strategic position on the border between England and Scotland made it a vital stronghold and border defence, and witness to many famous sieges and skirmishes. A notorious prison, it also housed a royal captive in Mary Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned at Carlisle Castle in 1568 before her eventual execution some years later in 1587.

Unlike most medieval forts, Carlisle Castle has been continuously occupied since its foundation by William II in 1092. The site also remained an operational fortress well into the 20th century as the headquarters of the Border Regiment.
