Commodore 1541 Drive Mechanism Testing - Double Check All The Connectors!!! C64 64 - Episode 3873

So, I have a brown working drive mechanism and a brown drive that does not want to work...time to do the swap and see what is what...one thing you must do is double check to make sure that all the connectors are plugged in the right way around, something that I do when I mess with things, but that I did not do this time before deciding there was an issue...the black read write head plug goes on both ways, but only works one way...there are 4 connections in there, and there are 5 spaces...if the connecter is not plugged in with the 1 wired plug to the back of the drive and the other 3 to the front with the empty one in the second position, it will not work...this disk drive that I just got I did not look at when I first tested it...but I should have...because...well, yes, the connector was backwards...so, time for more testing and documenting...etc, etc, etc...

It is time to complete the conversion...yes, the white drive mechanism needs to go in and be properly screwed and tested...I did find that I had to take the screws out of the circuit board to be able to slip this drive in...the brown drive was the pop up model while this had the turn down door...that I like much better, but of course this type of drive suffers much more from head failure...anyway, it was not easy to get the brown one out, but there is no why that I could figure out how to get the white one in without taking the screws out of the board...just another 5 screws...and as always, be gentle...and if you do not think you can do this sort of thing...do not do it...get somebody else to get it done for you!

I have here a wonderful lovely 1541 disk drive that seems to work but the drive mechanism is brown and it would look so much better with a matching one...Mother Commodore would put whatever they had into drives and if they did not have white ones, they would use the brown ones they had to get them out the door and onto the shelves...so, it works, but I think I should see about making it look much prettier...as well as have it reliable and wonderful...and it just so happens, I have another drive here that I could use as and then use the brown mechanism to fix the other drive on the table that will not work...everything leads to another possible fix...at least that is what I think...so, time to swap things, test things, document things and move on!
