Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass for Moya Moya Disease

Nirav J. Patel, MD, Department of Neurosurgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, performs an Extracranial-Intracranial Bypass to treat Moya Moya Disease, a rare disease of the blood vessels in the brain that can result in stroke.

The surgery was performed using micro-anastamosis techniques, allowing Dr. Patel to connect an artery from the scalp (superficial temporal artery) to a major artery in the Brain (middle cerebellar artery) in order to bypass blood flow to the diseased region of vessels.
