Таңбалы тас тарихи ескерткіші Алматы қаласынан 120 қашықтықта Іле өзенінінің оң жақ жағалауында орналасқан.
Өзен жағасындағы жартастардағы петроглифтердің арасында мыңға жуық тастағы суреттер мен бірнеше будда бейнелері сақталған. Сонымен қатар VIII – IX ғасырлардағы көне түркі руна жазулары да кездеседі.

Just about 120 kilometers from Almaty, on the right bank of the Ili River, is a set of 60-meter rocky gates: the sacred and mysterious Tamgaly Tas tract.
Tamgaly Tas in Kazakh language means «stones with the signs».
Here the rocks still preserve many petroglyphs, drawings of mysteries gods, latest Buddhist’s writings. There are around one thousand rock drawings among the petroglyphs, best known are the images of Buddha Shakyamuni, Buddha of Infinite Light Amitabha and Bodhisattva of Compassion Avalokiteshvara. Besides Buddhist writings, there is the stone with Old Turkic runic writings of the VIII—IX century, supposedly left of the cumans.
Kazakh scientist and archaeologist Zeinolla Samashev assumes that Tamgaly Tas was an open-air sanctuary where religious rituals were held according to the season. Ancient humans used to come there to recharge themselves with energy and health.
