Spotlight On: Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise. His watches, on and off screen.

Tom Cruise needs no introduction. From the character drama The Color of Money, to the high-octane Mission : Impossible, he has proven that he can score across all movie genres.

Set to reprise his iconic role in Top Gun this year, he remains one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, with an illustrious 30-year and counting career.

Watches help make a character; and Tom has worn many timepieces in his long list of films.

Check out the watches we’ve spotted on Tom Cruise, on screen and in real life.

Of course, we have to start with Top Gun - without a doubt, Tom’s career-defining film. In the aviation movie, Tom played Maverick, a fighter-pilot-in-training.

Most people assume that he was wearing IWC in many of the scenes, because the Swiss watchmaker issues Top Gun-branded timepieces.

The truth is, IWC Top Gun watches were named after the U.S. Navy’s Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program – which also inspired the film.

Tom was actually wearing a Porsche Design Orfina military chronograph. A black PVD coated watch, and one of the first in the market to use PVD coating.

We’ve also seen Tom wear Rolex watches in some of his earliest films, like Rain Man and Cocktail.

In the 1988 film Rain Man, Tom starred alongside Dustin Hoffman as a self-centered car salesman.

He wore a yellow gold Rolex President Day-Date. The watch received a lot of airtime – especially in the scene where his character tries to pawn the watch.

In the same year, he starred in the film Cocktail as mixologist Flanagan.

When Flanagan starts to earn well in Jamaica, he gets himself a steel Rolex Air King. A durable and reliable watch, even when you’re constantly on the move.

In the 2010s, Tom also wore Rolex as his everyday watch - a steel Rolex Datejust with a white dial and slim roman numerals.

With its slim silhouette and Oyster bracelet, this Rolex Datejust is without a doubt, a versatile and enduring classic.

In the 2000s, we spotted Tom wearing other brands on screen – namely Omega, IWC and Tudor.

In the 2001 science fiction thriller, Vanilla Sky, Tom played a publishing magnate who finds himself in an unexpected romance.

IWC is one of the pioneers in creating aviation watches, and this relation to flying made it a shoo in for the film.

In 2005, we spotted Tom wearing a vintage Omega chronograph in War of the Worlds.

While it’s not a massive tool watch by any means, it sure held its own in the alien invasion film’s action scenes.

In 2011’s fourth installment of Mission : Impossible, Tom’s Ethan Hunt character wore the grey dial Tudor Heritage Chrono watch.

The Heritage Chrono is known for its very distinct dial, inspired by the kaleidoscopic “Monte-Carlo” dials of Tudor chronographs, from the 1970s.

The reworked modern version is dynamic and robust, and a perfect choice for the CIA agent.

Through the years, it looks like Tom has developed a taste for larger watches in real life.

He's been spotted wearing a Panerai Luminor Marina. The robustness and high legibility of Panerai watches make them a top choice among action stars.

On a more recent watch spotting, we saw Tom sporting a Cartier Calibre Chronograph.

He wore it throughout the tour for 2018's Mission: Impossible - Fallout. He chose the stainless steel, silver dial model, and the monochromatic look adds a touch of elegance to the robust Cartier sport watch.

From solid gold timepieces, to robust tool watches, Tom sure wears them well.
