Why intuition is more powerful than intelligence

Intuition has a bad reputation.

In the modern era, we're told that all of our decisions should be made based on facts and figures.
Well, here's a story of what happens when the expert curators and researchers of the storied Getty Museum of California ignored a powerful intuition, because they had nothing to prove it:

The Getty Museum researchers couldn't believe their eyes. An art dealer had just presented them with a miraculously perfect ancient Greek statue. Such statues are usually found heavily damaged with missing limbs- like the famous Venus de Milo. The Getty duly conducted a rigorous 14-month examination of the statue before paying 9 million dollars for it. But the moment they unveiled this rare wonder to the public, multiple other experts immediately raised their doubts. The Getty was forced to conduct a second study, and it revealed that the statue was a fake- aged with potato mold.

Did nobody at the Getty notice something was wrong over 14 months? It turned out they had. 3 experts had commented that "It doesn't look right". Notably, the head of the Athens Archeological Society, commented upon "feeling a wave of intuitive repulsion." However, they had failed to provide detailed evidence to support this, and thus the purchase was made.

How many times have we experienced a similar gut feeling that something wasn't right, but we ignored it simply because we couldn't come up with a logical reason? When you keep finding yourself being unexpectedly wrong, then it's no longer unexpected, and you're just wrong.
