Hundreds attended the start of a two-day regional consultation on the 2016 electoral process in Mogadishu on Monday. Participants included 150 regional representatives from Banaadir, Hiraan and Middle Shabelle.
Officially opening the forum, the governor of Banaadir, who is also the Mayor of Mogadishu, Mr. Yusuf Hussein Jimaale, underlined that this consultation will contribute to defining the structure of the 2016 electoral process in Somalia. The next President of the Federal Republic of Somalia as well as the next Federal Government will ultimately emerge from this electoral process.
“Today the fate of 2016 is upon the Somali people. […] It is an opportunity that we never had before and we must make use of it. If you look at the banner, it is representative of the Somali culture, which is settling disputes under a tree. We are being consulted on the electoral process for 2016 because a one-person, one-vote election is not achievable. If collectively, we share our thoughts, one of us might come up with a solution, so do not hold back your thoughts,” the governor stressed.
The delegates, comprising representatives of regional administrations, community leaders, the business community, civil society groups and religious leaders, divided themselves into eight groups and deliberated on the four options proposed for the 2016 electoral process.
One of the delegates, Shukri Hussein Osoble, expressed satisfaction at the discussions.
