The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was a NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan that was established by the United Nations Security Council in December 2001.

Germany started to deploy soldiers to Afghanistan in January 2002.
Back then circumscribed as security mission, the German Army found itself in the most demanding conflict after World War II.

To this day 59 German soldiers have been killed in action during the War in Afghanistan.
