But the slowdown began with COVID’s chip shortage, rising prices, quality issues, and longer upgrade cycles. Then AI changed everything. Since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022, the tech industry’s focus, capital, and semiconductor supply have shifted toward AI infrastructure instead of smartphones. In 2026, innovation has plateaued, prices are rising, launches are slowing, and consumers are holding phones for over 3 years. Smartphones aren’t dying — they’re becoming utility devices like PCs. The next phase will be AI-native phones with on-device AI agents and generative interfaces, but until the AI hardware supply paradox is solved, we’re entering the toughest era of smartphones yet.
