The neckerchief, since ancient times, a man has always felt the necessity to wear something around his neck. With the explosion of modern sportswear in the 1920s, the novelty of the open-necked sport shirt inspired a variety of new ways to appoint the neck. Long a popular fashion at European watering holes, the sports scraf was, an still is, closely identified with Riviera high style. As international travel accelerate the adoption of lightweight sportswear, it wasn't long before the new "tour de cou" began turning up around the necks of smartly turned out Americans from the south of France to the Caribbean stylish strongholds.

Two basic models of sport neck-wear began taking shape. The more common was the neckerchief, a solid color or patterned square of silk, cotton, or other material that was knotted or draped in ascot fashion around the neck.
