Peter Mandelson and Jeffrey Epstein have put one issue back into the spotlight: ethics.

Here's my rule.

I call it the Hotel Bathrobe Test.

Before you hire someone, ask yourself one question:

Would this person steal the bathrobe from a hotel if they thought nobody would find out?

The bathrobe isn't the point.

Character is.

Too many organisations hire people because they're talented, connected, experienced or famous.

Then everyone acts surprised when problems emerge later.

Why?

Because they ignored the warning signs.

The debate around Peter Mandelson, Jeffrey Epstein, vetting and judgement is bigger than politics.

It applies to businesses, charities, churches, schools and governments.

Skills matter.

Experience matters.

But character matters more.

If somebody cuts corners in small things, don't be shocked if bigger problems appear later.

A person can be brilliant and still bring your organisation into disrepute.

That's why every hiring process should include an ethics test.

Not a written test.

A character test.

How do they treat people?

Do they tell the truth when it costs them?

Do they keep their word?

Can they be trusted when nobody is watching?

The best organisations don't just hire the smartest people.

They hire the most trustworthy people.

Because competence can be trained.

Character is much harder to teach.
