Egg Tempera Paint - sketching plein air at the Eden Project Cornwall
I've always wanted to try Egg Tempera Paint and saw that Sennelier do tube versions, which I thought would be a lot easier for plein air sketching and a good way to try them out!
It was the Easter holidays so we had a day out at the Eden Project near St Austell, Cornwall. Eden Project is a fantastic place to visit (we are lucky to have locals passes for the year!). It is has 2 biomes (1 rain forest and 1 Mediterranean) and lots of outdoor plants and trees to explore. The robins are very friendly as you will see in the video!
I only bought 4 tubes of egg tempera paint (yellow ochre, cadmium red, ivory black and white) - just in case I didn't like it! So this was the limited 'Zorn' palette that I used for this plein air sketch.
I used old metal pencil cases for my palettes and had 2 brushes, a flat and a small round. I also had some pencils and plenty of water in a pot to mix with the egg tempera. The little 8" x 4" plywood panel fitted nicely into my bag and was prepared with traditional chalk gesso. The egg tempera dries very quickly so it was easy to transport home - in my bag.
It was a great, fun day out and the weather was superb for mid April.
I really enjoyed the egg tempera paint and will continue experimenting with it and I may even start making my own in the studio so watch this space!
Thank you for watching - bye for now
