Prototype to Product – Bringing your idea to market. Challenges, risks, rewards, pricing tips…
Video sponsor: PCBWay: $5 for 2 layer PCBs with 24hr turnaround at https://www.pcbway.com/
This video is about the process of taking an idea from prototype to product. How do you move from the few prototype boards you shared with friends to getting a large number of boards professionally produced? What are the risks, rewards, and reality about covering your costs and maybe turning a modest profit?
My friend designed a very nifty SD card drive for the TRS-80 Model 100 family of computers it was so awesome I encouraged him to bring them to market and offered to help any way I could. Even with two of us, this would be a big task, so we had the boards assembled by PCBWay. Product link: https://www.soigeneris.com/tandy-tpdd-2-backpack-drive
We have both worked in the industry, but it was the first time we had done a project together and worked with an outside contractor for PCB assembly. We decided to document so as to offer some insight and encouragement to other hobbyists.
Timeline:
00:00 – Intro
01:50 – Project flow, an outline
03:47 – PCB Assembly service
08:37 – The assembled PCBs have arrived!
11:42 – Final assembly, lots of work
16:29 – Paperwork, not fun but essential
19:00 – Risks, Rewards, Reality
24:01 – Wrap up
