18 Hot Springs

Hot Springs is about 70 miles west of Little Rock. The town had its heyday during the Prohibition era and a minor resurgance after Prohibition ended when the national baseball teams converged there for spring training.
During the Prohibition era, the town was run by and for the mobsters who made their money off sly grog. Al Capone had a dedicated room at the Arlington Hotel. There was an underground escape route that he used to avoid law enforcement and other gangsters. His escape route went through the tunnel that runs under the middle of the main street and carries the outflow of the hot springs from the bath houses. The town is famous for the bath house row, and other unsavory pursuits favored by the gangsters and baseball players. We went into a couple of the bath houses, but didn't indulge ourselves. We also went into the Gangster Museum, which although dated and a bit tacky, was worth the visit.
