How often should I get up to move if I have a sedentary job?

You wanted to know how long you should be moving around if you have a sedentary desk job. And you're doing well to think about that actually. Studies have been done on this, and it shows that sitting for long periods of time is not good for our bodies. And so, as a good rule of thumb, get up and move around about 10 minutes out of every hour, or 5 minutes every half hour. And this might just be still standing at your desk and doing work just standing instead of sitting. You can also stretch. And the people you work with may make fun of you at first, but it's worth a comment or two, because it's your health. And after a while, maybe they'll start following your example and doing it too. Other things to think about are taking the stairs, parking farther away, just getting more steps in during your day. Many people are motivated by tracking their steps overall. And maybe on their lunch break, instead of just sitting around the whole time, eat your food, and get up and go for a walk, get some fresh air. And that's not only good for your body, but also good for your mind. And these things also improve productivity at work.

Of course, daily exercise is important too. And as a good rule of thumb for that, you should get about 30 minutes of moderately intense cardiovascular exercise on most days of the week. If you have concerns or questions about your health, talk with your doctor. And if you have more questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
