How to retrieve your drain rod is a quick video and shows a simple alteration made to a universal drop scraper, to help with the attempt of how to retrieve your drain rod.

Why you need to get a drain rod back from the sewer... they can add or cause a blockage very quickly. If you can't get a drain rod back, call your local drain expert to help.
Here is a simple way to get a drain rod back, without using the worm type attachment that is sold separately.
1) Take a universal drop scraper, and using an angle grinder, cut off the 2 sharp corners at the top, making easier access through the drain.
2) Measure 20mm in the centre of the drop scraper, and cut 2 slots either side of the centre, about 25mm long.
3) Then take a pair of pliers or mole grips, and bend the cut section out, and cut off with angle grinder.
finish off with a file, removing any sharp edges.
The threaded ferrel on the rod is around 22mm, so make sure you cut a 20mm gap, or it may not work properly.

Why Drain Rods Get Stuck Or Lost?
Drain rods are available from most DIY and hardware stores.
They often provide a quick, short-term solution to smaller drain blockages for residential homes.
While you can do-it-yourself, I would recommend contacting a specialist to provide a
drain rodding & water jetting service, to ensure the entire blockage is removed safely.

The main cause of drain rods becoming lose and detached during the drain clearing process
is that they simply un-thread themselves.
The rods simply screw together and all that thrashing about in the drain can cause the rods to spin and undo.
Unfortunately twisting the rods anti-clockwise unscrews them, and 9/10 it will be
the joint halfway down the system that separates first, and leaves you holding just three of the six rods you started with.
