Blender101 - Texturing - Unwrapping basics

To prepare a model for texturing, it must be unwrapped, also known as UV Mapping, UVW Mapping, UV Unwrapping, etc etc. Unwrapping in Blender is a complex topic, but its fundamentals are very simple:

1. Mark Edges with Seams
2. Click Unwrap.

By repeating the process of 1 and 2 in a logical manner, eventually your object will unfold, allowing it to be textured.

There is a lot more that goes into making a "good" unwrap than this, but this is a basic approach that will get you started.
