Teaching English online can be a wonderful and transformative experience if you’re ready, possess basic skills and requirements, as well as a friendly personality and the ability to connect with people through a screen.

Don’t be blinded by all of the hype and referral marketing that is going on. Some teacher referrals are great and recruit new teachers who go on to live a better life. Some are just in it for a quick short term return. Don’t worry about all that. Just focus on yourself.

There are some basic facts that you should be aware of whether you’re new, about to start or even experienced. Keep all of these things in mind. Most importantly, I forgot to ask this question in the video; do you see yourself teaching through a screen when you’re 40, 45 and 50 years old? These are the times where you really need to be wise with what you’re doing and how you’re setting up your future.

1. TEFL online courses want your money so non-native English speakers be aware as well as teacher candidates with strong accent issues. Many online TEFL courses will take anybody even though they most likely will not have a future with teaching English online so a lot of people are getting taken advantage of right now and I hope that number of vulnerable people will go down once more people see this video. People are literally desperate for jobs and most teaching jobs are now going online so certification courses are just marketing and waiting for teachers to line up and take courses.

2. The TEFL world has changed much more now than ever. There are still a lot of great courses to get your TEFL teacher certification from. Unfortunately cheap and ineffective online courses are popular right now which leave out highly qualified courses with trained staff. But that’s the way it goes. Hope I can just bring some awareness.

3. No benefits like 401K. No health and dental insurance. As well as you will not be paid on holidays and the weekend. In most cases the weekend is going to be the easiest time to get your highest amount of bookings which will limit your time to family and personal time to catch up on chores and hobbies.

4. You operate your schedule which is one of the greatest things about teaching English online
5. No formal lesson planning. You can preview slides but teacher guides are already embedded into the curriculum software.
6. Feedback reports are generic yet effective and mostly automated now with the new curriculum.
7. Each month is the same payment format per lesson.
8. No salary growth even if you have over 5000 hours. There is no teacher payment growth tenure.
9. Work from home is a huge bonus and you don’t have to drive anywhere. I sleep a lot better and I have more relaxed meal times.
10. Overall there’s a give and take to anything. Ultimately it’s up to you, your attitude and decisions that determine your quality of life. I’m working to make a living from the land and increase mine and my family’s health, wealth, happiness and freedom.
