The Public Square and Everything In It - Carl Trueman

In this video, I interview historian and theologian Carl Trueman. We focus on the ideas in his forthcoming book, "The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self." He starts off his book with this statement: "The origins of this book lie in my curiosity about how and why a particular statement has come to be regarded as coherent and meaningful: 'I am a woman trapped in a man's body'." Then we go on to discuss the ideology of expressive individualism which has captured the hearts and minds of many or most Americans. It is the view that the purpose of life is to be authentic; that the way to be authentic is to align our lives with our deepest desires; and that the way to be a righteous society is to applaud people for aligning their lives with their desires. Trueman rejects this way of thinking as fundamentally un-Christian and advises Christians on how to minister in an era of expressive individualism.
