FULL THROTTLE SD40-2 Struggles to Take out the Trash!

Notch 8, don’t be late! Except when one of your locomotives dies, then what? Turn it up! Listen to a single full throttle SD40-2 struggle to pull a heavy 6000-ton garbage train while also pushing a dead locomotive! It’s a hot and humid July afternoon, so the doors are in the “air conditioning” position and the trash absolutely reeks!

These trash trains run daily from North Jersey to Mingo Junction, Ohio. Trash is arguably one of New York City’s greatest exports. Back in 2009 & 2010 these trains with sets of SD40-2’s, giving railfans a great a show! I guess this is truly a case of “One Man’s Trash is another Man’s Treasure.” Video information is below:

0:00 - Struggling up a 10-mile hill at Robesonia with a near 0.5% grade, the NS SD40-2 3424 has shut down, leaving NS SD40-2 3383 to do all the pulling.
2:36 - 6.5 miles later at Richland, the train continues to struggle. They made a brief pause to allow the 3383 to cool down and attempt to restart the 3424, but no luck. Unfortunately, the clouds were not cooperating.
4:10 - 6 miles later at Avon, the train gains speed as the grade starts a slight descending grade into Lebanon city.
