Panarea - The Island of Beauty - Aeolian Islands - Sicily

Island of Panarea, Aeolian archipelago, a few miles north of the northern coast of Sicily. Let's go to the discovery of another Aeolian pearl, the oldest, famous for the beauty of its landscapes, for the purity of its waters and for the elegance of the urban area.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, as shown by the spectacular ruins of the Neolithic village of Capo Milazzese, the island is at the center of a small archipelago in the archipelago, surrounded by the uninhabited Basiluzzo and numerous smaller islets (Dattilo, Lisca Bianca, Lisca Nera, Formiche, etc), sometimes little more than rocky stacks whose view nevertheless characterizes the marine panorama. Just look out from the terrace of the church of San Pietro to realize it.
The small town occupies a hollow facing north-east with its houses with typical Aeolian architecture, the streets accessible only to electric vehicles and a benevolent nature that offers brushstrokes of light and color. A single road connects the landing with the southern end of the island, crossing lush countryside and the district of Drautto (named after an Arab pirate). At the end of the road opens the splendid sandy beach of Cala degli Zimmari and from here, with a short trekking up a rocky ridge, you reach the promontory of Capo Milazzese with the suggestive prehistoric village and the splendid Cala Junco, a natural bay between the most beautiful of the Aeolian archipelago, today a protected marine area.

Panarea is probably the most "exclusive" of the Aeolian Islands, at least this is the label commonly affixed to it. Undoubtedly its refined architecture, the presence of villas with sober splendor and the fame of worldliness that surrounds some of its nightclubs could confuse the superficial visitor. In reality, the island is breathtakingly beautiful, a rare example of a man / nature union in which man has made the beauty of nature extraordinary.
To fully appreciate it, take some time, even if the island is actually very small, if possible, dedicate at least three or four days to it. You will discover that Panarea is much more than a fantastic place for holidays.

This short film was shot in 2020, a difficult year as you can imagine. I found Panarea almost deserted due to the restrictions and the locals, the tourist operators, seriously in difficulty. I dedicate this video to them, to the stubbornness with which they faced the crisis. I hope that the worst is over for them too.

For the shooting I used my old Canon Legria. And thank goodness it was still working because my “modern” equipment had been missing for months in a technical assistance laboratory in Milan. Once again I realized how comfortable it is to shoot with a small, basic but efficient camera, equipped with an excellent stabilizer and a spectacular zoom. Obviously no 4k but that's okay. Part of the shots were also made with the GoPro Hero 7, especially the sea ones, and with the Mavic Air (aerial ones).
Post-production, editing and color correction are achieved with Cyberlink PowerDirector suite 5.
The photos are by Francesca Sparatore who uses a Nikon d7500 and various lenses.
The music track is "Whispers" by Hyson and is available on Free Music Archive.
