Ancient war strategies evolved over time, with some of the earliest tactics being based on concealment and surprise, such as ambushes and raids. These tactics were similar to those used in hunting, and may have originated from that practice.

Phalanx
A tactical formation of heavily armed infantry standing shoulder to shoulder in files. The ancient Greeks developed the phalanx, which remained in use in modified form until the gunpowder era.
Forcing the enemy to submit
This could be done by defeating the enemy's army in the field, or by burning their fields, waiting them out, or threatening a siege.
Siege warfare
Also known as poliorcetics, this involved using battering rams, catapults, and mining to attack fortified cities.
Profit
A personal goal in war, which could be monetary or political. For example, the Gallic tribes raided for monetary profit, while great leaders in war were often rewarded with government office.
Other strategies that have been used in warfare include:
annihilation, exhaustion, attrition warfare, scorched earth action, blockade, guerrilla campaign, deception, and feint.
