The data is then broken into small packets that travel through routers, fibre-optic cables and massive submarine cables crossing the oceans. These packets may take different routes around congestion and outages before being reassembled on your device.

The result feels instant, but behind every click is a vast global network built by millions of kilometres of fibre and decades of engineering.
