Improving Freewing's MiG-29 RC Jet With Eagle Tree VECTOR Gyro! ✈️
Watch the next few flights with my Freewing MiG-29 twin 80mm EDF scale RC jet as I keep fine tuning the settings for the newly installed gyro to optimize stabilization performance in my quest to mod this plane into an FPV platform! :D
To celebrate the 300 flights mark with the MiG-29 I decided to finally install a gyro, and I chose the now dicontinued Eagle Tree Vector (Eagle Tree sadly closed shop several years ago), because I plan to mod the plane with FPV gear, and the Vector has one of the nicest OSDs around, same as the one I now use on my FPV modded Su-35, so keep tuned for that too!!! :D
The gyro still needs further fine tuning but here it was already performing a lot better than in the gyro-maiden video! :)
I'll keep fine tweaking parameters the upcoming flights and soon I'll also add an additional separate gyro for the nozzles.

The servos for the stabilators have been replaced by a couple of Promodeler DS150CLHVs. The jet feels more locked-in with them and it also has allowed me to increase the throws, which is really important for extreme post-stall flight performance.
My impression so far is that these are some of the best servos you can get in this weight and size class, particularly at this price point, but they essentially lock in place when powered off so if you aren't careful when handling the jet, you could easily damage the gears. And no, this video isn't sponsored, I paid for the servos myself, thanks! ;)

Regarding my MiG-29 setup:
QUICK LIST OF MODS
- CG 25mm behind factory marks on the wings.
- Reflex trailing edge by 3mm flaps, 5mm ailerons (aprox).
- Reinforced stab assemblies to torsion (Epoxy - thick glass fiber laminate).
- Reinforced stabs to prevent deformation (WBPU - thin glass fiber laminate, 18g/m2).
- Replaced stab servos first by Corona DS-238MG, and then ProModeler DS150CLHV.
- Replaced stab linkages by 4-40 threaded rod with heavy duty Du-Bro ball links.
- Removed stock BEC.
- Installed separate 20A UBEC that runs from a standalone receiver battery (2S 610mAh).
- Installed ferrite chokes on ESC-Rx leads (next to ESC) and on the stab servo leads (next to servo).
- I am using the old FrSky Redundancy Bus for everything except landing gear, lights, and everything that goes through the ribbon cables (ailerons, flaps, gear doors), as these need to go through the BB.
- Shortened some of the wires, as I installed the RBus in the aft battery compartment.
- Removed the toe out on the main landing gear struts by filing the chamfer on the axle pin that connects strut with retract.
- Installed Eagle Tree Vector gyro.
I was concerned about the structural integrity of the stabs, and stab assembly so I did reinforce them with glass fiber cloth. After my reinforcement mods, the stabs are much more solid now. 💕
I took many of the 'well-known' ideas and good practices about this model recommended by other MiG-owners, including adding reflex to the flaps and ailerons to reduce trim drag, unloading the stabs and maximize top speed. I also replaced the taileron servos by better ones, their linkages by 4-40 pushrods, and also installed ferrite chokes on the ESCs leads to the rx as well as the taileron servo leads to reduce potential RF noise on such long leads.
I also made my own personal installation of the electronics and basically rewired the whole jet, changed the placement of the components, added a 20A UBEC, a redundancy bus, 2x X8R receivers... the list goes on.
