HUBAPALOOZA DH COURSE #1

Hubapalooza at Camp Sekani on Beacon Hill in Spokane, WA is one of our favorite downhill MTB races of the year - so fun! There are two DH courses, both raced on the same day. This is my race run in Sport Class on course 1 in 2022. The 2023 race is coming up next week - let's GO!

Course 1 is fast and flowy, generally less technically challenging than course 2 and has some big pedal sections. For this reason, I and many others choose a trail bike for this race. I'm on my Evil Insurgent LB here. But don't be fooled, this is still a challenging course - I have lots of room for improvement this year!

The first section of the course features a few drops and tight corners. Braking points and line choice is important here and throughout the course. I take a slightly easier and slower line through the first rock feature at 0:29, will try to straighten this out in 2023. I REALLY want to jump the janky rock at 0:44 in 2023 - here I splat onto the rock and got bounced, nearly causing a crash.

The next section has a few jumps and fun corners, lots of pedaling. Make sure to unweight over the rocks. The rock at 1:22 is one of the more technically challenging features on this course, and is required in Sport. Try to keep speed, but at the same time there's a small V-shaped gap that you have to hit - easy to clip a pedal here! The step-up at 1:29 is janky, I landed heavy on my. front wheel.

From here down, the trail is fun and flowy berms on a trail called Hollywood. Be careful, it's slippery and you will be tired! But keep pushing to the finish line!
