India’s ‘Mother of Trees’: Thimmakka’s Green Legacy 🌿

This video tells the extraordinary story of Saalumarada Thimmakka, the woman who turned personal pain into one of India’s greatest environmental legacies.

Along a quiet stretch of southern Karnataka, a 4-km corridor of 385 banyan trees stands as living proof of her decades of love, resilience, and dedication. Born in poverty, denied formal schooling, and stigmatized for being childless, she redefined motherhood by nurturing saplings as her own children—watering them daily, fencing them, and protecting them until they rose into giants.

From tending to a single sapling to becoming India’s “Mother of Trees,” Thimmakka’s contribution earned her national and global recognition—Padma Shri, National Citizen’s Award, honorary doctorate, and a place in BBC’s 100 Women. Even in her final years, she fought courageously to protect her trees when a road-widening project threatened them—and she succeeded.

Her passing on 14 November 2025, at around 114 years of age, leaves behind a living legacy that continues to inspire environmentalists, policymakers, and UPSC aspirants alike.
This story is not just about trees—it’s about ethics, empathy, service, and how one individual can shape an entire landscape.
