Flux Pavilion - Against The Clock
Against the Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with. You can watch all the past episodes here.
Flux Pavilion is one of dubstep’s biggest exports, in no short part due to ‘I Can’t Stop’ – a track that was co-opted by Jay Z and Kanye West for Watch the Throne. He’s collaborated with Childish Gambino, Dillon Francis and Steve Aoki, as well as releasing various singles through the Circus label he co-founded. He also released his debut album Tesla through the imprint last year.
On Flux’s Against the Clock, he focuses on the show-stopping synths and drums that he’s known for, but also records his own vocal sample, singing into a mic and re-pitching it.
He explained this technique to FACT after the session: “I usually pitch everything down six or seven semi tones, then sing it in my normal voice, then pitch it back up again so it becomes high pitched (or a naturally sung high pitch). You’re not just pitching something up so it has to fit. Sometimes it’s interesting to do harmonies low and then sing your normally over the top, it brings this really weird effect.”
