HOW TO CUT A SIDE SLIT DRESS.

Hi everyone, welcome to FashionEmpire!
and on this channel, I teach you how to create stylish and trendy outfits step-by-step.
In today’s class I’m going to show you how to cut this beautiful Ankara slit wrap dress. It’s simple, elegant, and perfect for beginners.
Make sure you watch till the end so you don’t miss any step!
Before we start, here are the materials you’ll need:
- Ankara fabric (2 to 3 yards)
- Measuring tape
- Tailor’s chalk or marker
- Scissors
- Pins
- Ruler
Make sure your fabric is well ironed and ready.
Now let’s quickly go over the measurements you need:
- Bust
- Waist
- Hip
- Shoulder
- Dress length
For this tutorial, I’ll be working with these sample measurements:
Always make sure your measurements are accurate, because that’s the foundation of a perfect fit.
Now,
Fold your fabric into two, lengthwise, with the right sides facing each other.
Make sure the edges align properly—this is very important for accurate cutting.
Let’s start with the front bodice.
Place your folded fabric on the table—this side is the fold, and that will be our center front.
Now mark your shoulder measurement, neckline width, and neckline depth.
Next, mark your bust line and waist line using your measurements divided by four.
Draw your armhole curve and connect everything neatly.
Don’t forget to add your seam allowance—about 1 inch.
Now carefully cut it out… and remember, this is cut on fold.
Next is the back bodice.
This time, we are not cutting on fold.
Mark the same measurements as the front, but make the back neckline shallower.
Also, add allowance at the center back for your zipper.
Now cut out two separate pieces.
Now let’s cut the front skirt, which gives us that beautiful slit design.
Fold your fabric and mark your waist measurement divided by four.
Then measure your full skirt length.
Now here’s the key part—draw a slanted or curved line across the front.
This creates the wrap effect and the slit.
Cut carefully along that shape.
For the back skirt, we keep it simple.
Mark your hip measurement divided by four and your full length.
Shape it slightly for fitting, then cut two pieces.
To complete the cutting:
Cut two long strips for your straps.
Then cut two more strips for the waist tie detail—this is what creates that wrap look at the side.
So these are all the pieces we’ve cut:
- Front bodice (on fold)
- Back bodice (2 pieces)
- Front wrap skirt
- Back skirt (2 pieces)
- Straps
- Waist ties
At this point, your dress is fully ready for sewing.
