Kerala to ‘Keralam’? | Article 3 Explained | UPSC | NEXT IAS

The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to officially change the name of Kerala to Keralam, reflecting its traditional Malayalam identity.

Although the state has always been known as Keralam locally, it is recorded as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution. To correct this, the State Assembly passed resolutions in 2023 and 2024 requesting the Centre for the change.

📜 Under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution, altering a state’s name requires a constitutional process — proposal by the state, approvals by the Ministry of Home Affairs, passage of a Bill in Parliament, and official notification.

Historically, the term “Keralaputra” appears in Ashokan inscriptions (257 BCE). The modern state was formed on 1 November 1956 after linguistic reorganization — celebrated as Kerala Piravi.

👉 Important for UPSC Polity (Article 3, First Schedule, State Reorganisation).

💬 Question: In which year was Kerala formed?
