How to Sew an Art Quilt | Finishing Up | WF 7 | Zazu's Stitch Art Tutorials
Here we finish up and embellish our Wall Flowers art quilts. First we make and attach a hanging sleeve. Then we make holes in the quilt, and I show some additional fabric painting. Finally we add some beading. Please join us.
0:00 Intro
0:24 Quick coverage of the SLEEVE I use for to make hanging easy & foolproof for commercial sales. It is not for challenges and competitions. I covered this sleeve in a ten minute video here: Hanging Sleeve for Irregular Bindings: https://youtu.be/cETtK9NLjUw
1:40 I show the HANGING LATH I use to for the quilt and refer you a four minute video on how to make it: Pro Sewing Tips: #26 | Easy Hanging Lath for wall hangings https://youtu.be/5PhVNGUn4u4
2:50 INTRO ON HOLES - I end up putting 5 holes in my quilt and I show you two ways to do it. AVOID THE TOP WHERE YOUR SLEEVE IS LOCATED!!
3:57 REGULAR HOLE
1) Mark your shape with right sides together.
2) Stitch twice with small stitches.
3) Trim shape closer than 1/8 inch.
4) Turn to back.
5) Iron flat as I have.
6) Trim edges to 3/4 of an inch.
7) Press edges under like a hem.
8) Hand sew neatly. (Not shown.)
7:28 HOLE NEXT TO TRAPUNTO
1) Cut a small access hole to an area you can stuff.
2) Stuff the area.
3) Place fabric on hole area NEXT TO the trapunto; pin up from the quilt back.
4) Mark a larger hole on the quilt back.
5) Stitch twice, avoiding pins & stuffing.
6) Etc.
10:17 PAINT - I describe how I did. I use a lot of metallic fabric paints
10:59 BEADING - How I beaded the original Wall Flower art quilt.
11:48 How to HIDE YOUR KNOT by popping it into your fabric and batting. This work will bend your needle.
12:28 Tie a double knot every 5 or 6 beads and HIDE THE KNOT IN A BEAD. Tiny beads won't do this very well, but use a single thread.
13:18 UsePLIERS to pull and push the needle, but if the going is really hard, make a new plan.
13:43 The contents of my BEAD BOX: old embroidery scissors, needles, Thread Heaven, nymo thread, Vellux rectangle, needle nosed pliers, thimbles, Bead Spinner, Beam N Read, and cheaters.
15:23 I try to resolve that feeling of "It just needs something."
16:05 A big part of this process is trying new things to see if they will work. Garment sewing is extremely helpful for this kind of work. Here is a link to Diana Wright's zebra quilt on Facebook:

16:49 Any satin stitching should have been done before adding the sleeve.
