St Peter's Church in Corpusty,Norfolk Drone footage

St Peter's stood on this windswept eminence in Norfolk since the late 14th century. But by the 1960s it was in trouble. It was abandoned, ransacked by thieves and vandals. In the late 1960s work began with local residents who were desperately concerned about this vulnerable, venerable church.

Two locals in particular, Roger Last and Lady Billa Harrod, decided something had to be done to haul St Peter’s back from the brink. The meeting of Billa and Roger led to the formation of the Committee for Country Churches in 1976, which would become the superb Norfolk Churches Trust.

But time was running out for St Peter’s. The Diocese had obtained permission to demolish the medieval church. But before the wrecking ball could swing – benefactors stepped in and bought the church.

Progress was slow. the tower and porch were mended. The glazing was reinstated. Only for the vandals to smash them out again. Benefactors could only afford to “re-glaze” them with corrugated iron sheeting. One step forward, two steps back. It was a relentless uphill battle.

In 2009, following discussions with the Norfolk Churches Trust, Ownership was transferred to the trust along with a donation to help with the ongoing repairs - which were still substantial.

In 68 years, St Peter’s is the only church the benefactors “passed on” to another owner. But it seems right that Norfolk Churches Trust should care for the church which instigated their foundation.
