Vincent Van Gogh – Online Learning Module 5: Self Portraits | Zart Art

Self-portraits were very much a focus in Van Gogh’s life. Today Kylie will inspire with a very creative way to create a self-portrait using pastel and vegetable oil.

Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch artist, born in 1853. Vincent Van Gogh is considered one of the most famous, influential and important artists in the history of Western art. Vincent began his career as a religious minister before working as a teacher, a bookshop clerk and in an art gallery.

It wasn’t until he was 27 that he devoted himself to painting. Considered a Post-Impressionist, Vincent struggled to connect with people and suffered with mental health issue throughout his life. He found solace in painting, it gave him peace and joy and he committed himself to it with immense passion. Vincent painted the people and places around him and his work is full of bold colour, and textured and expressive brushwork.

In this unit of work, Van Gogh’s artwork and portraiture will be used as a catalyst to inspire students to create. The activities will use the art elements to explore materials and techniques in painting, collage and mark making.
