Julie Andrews Cameo in "Unconditional Love" (2002)
Julie Andrews Cameo in "Unconditional Love" (2002)
------------------------------------
“High in the sky, an aeroplane is pummelled by violent turbulence, pitching the passengers almost out of their seats. Alone among them, Julie Andrews keeps a stiff upper lip, undoing her seatbelt and marching up the aisle into the cockpit. ‘It’s all right everybody,’ she says, into the captain’s microphone. ‘We’ll get through this.’ And she starts to sing. ‘Getting to know you, getting to know all about you . . .’
One passenger grabs her husband’s arm. ‘Julie Andrews is in the cockpit.’
The man visibly relaxes. ‘Thank God.’
If ever Julie had wanted to send up her image in public, she had a perfect opportunity to do so in P.J. Hogan’s black comedy Unconditional Love, lip-synching to her recording of The King and I in a non-credited cameo as herself. The story of the devoted fan of a dead pop star, who travels from Chicago to attend his funeral in rural England, Unconditional Love starred Kathy Bates (the fan), Jonathan Pryce (the star) and Rupert Everett (his secret lover). Unfortunately, the film, shot in late 1999 and early 2000, was plagued with distribution problems. Its production company, New Line Cinema, delayed the American release for over three years, eventually airing it on the Starz television network in 2003, before consigning it to DVD oblivion.”
