The Water Witch: The Experimental Ship That Vanished

The Water Witch was one of the most unusual steamers on the Great Lakes—an experimental vessel known for its striking design, impressive speed, and troubling mechanical history. In November 1863, during a brutal gale on Lake Huron, she was seen battling the storm, listing badly, her smokestack gone.

Then she disappeared.

No survivors. No final testimony. No clear explanation for what happened in her last moments.

In this episode of Lake Effect, we trace the rise of the Water Witch, her innovative but risky engineering, her earlier near-catastrophe on Lake Superior, the mystery surrounding her final voyage, the ghost ship stories that followed, and the 2021 discovery that finally located the wreck deep in Saginaw Bay.

Was she overwhelmed by the storm?
Did her machinery fail?
Or was disaster built into the ship from the very beginning?
