First Look at the EagleTree Vector & Why I went for the Vector over the Pixhawk PX4
After writing the use of a Naze32 board off in a flying wing, I needed an alternative, the two that came head to head were the Pixhawk PX4 & the Vector. Press SHOW MORE below to find out why I went for the Vector.
I started off using a Naze32 board as I'm used to these from my quadcopters, they're great! They have the option to configure them to work on a plane or a flying wing.
While the flight stabilization via the Naze32 for a flying wing (a Teksumo) was absolutely brilliant, the GPS functions were wild!
After enabling GPS Home the Teksumo would either fly at full speed at the ground OR something I've never seen before, prop-hang in the sky.
Something I've never seen before!
So I needed an alternative.
Hence I found the Pixhawk & Vector systems.
Both of these FC (flight control) boards have decent histories, they both do basically the same thing, keep a plane or quadcopter for that matter in the air, have GPS RTH & throw in lots of extras too.
The thing that put me off the Pixhawk PX4 was simple, it appears from the outside that the 1M of memory was a programmed in upgrade point.
If you watch the video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNgClHf9nIo Randy explains what the issue is, how to identify it and what the future holds for you if you have a Pixhawk version 2.4.6.
Quote "It should still fly, but become unstable via the USB connection"
Of course you can now buy version 2.4.8 which has 2M of memory, but the thought of there being such a low memory cap really put me off the Pixhawk.
I was researching the EagleTree Vector at the same time, yes it is nearly twice the price when you consider I bought a load of extras, but as one of the flying buddies put it, "I've never had a plane not come yet with a vector". That sold it to me.
Completed build video & maiden in the Zeta FX-61 Phantom to follow.
I sincerely hope you find the video helpful.
