BLOCK 9 ~ Flower Power 2 Quilt-a-long

Today we quilt the final block of our Flower Power 2 Quilt-a-long, and it’s the Passionfruit flower. I have loved seeing everyone's creative confidence and Free-Motion Quilting skills grow from strength to strength. How far have you come from your very first block? You may just surprise yourself.

Finishing Instructions
This is a modified Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG) technique. I find this works best for people when we do a Quilt-a-long as it builds confidence as you are only tackling one block at a time.

Step 1: Iron all your blocks. Depending on how big your initial blocks started, trim each block to the exact same size leaving a border between 1 and 2”. For example, if you traced your block designs 8”square, all 1” all around the design and trim each block to 10” square, centring the design.

Step 2: Decide on your 9-patch layout. Place each block side by side and use a wide open zigzag on your machine to stitch each block together. Ensure to keep the joins flat - normal seams would be too lumpy.

Step 3: Create a row of 3 blocks and then stitch all 3 rows together using the above method.

Step 4: Cut 8 lengths of coordinating fabric to become the faux sashings and binding. For the sashings, you could use a wide bias tape, some ribbon or a lace trim. These are stitched on top to cover the zig zag joins.

Step 5: Now select a fabric for the backing to suit the size top you have created. Cut batting the same size as the backing and sandwich the 3 layers together. I suggest you ditch stitch the faux sashings and ditch stitch the main block outlines as a minimum, or quilt over all the black sharpie outlines in black thread. You may decide to quilt in the sashings too.

Step 6: Add binding to complete and a label with the date.

This Quilt-a-long is a little different. I am trying a new 'Pay What You Want' approach. This means you can purchase the designs from my website, HelenGodden.com for whatever price you like... from zero to $$ dollars... Perhaps the price of a coffee? A fat quarter? A yard of fabric? It's totally up to you! Here is a link to try my "Pay What You Want" purchase.

Register as a customer on my website and download the designs HERE:

Once you have purchased the pattern from my website, download and print out the designs to a consistent size. In my sample, the designs are 11” square, but you can print them any size you wish.

I demonstrate all the quilting of every block, on my Handi Quilter Sweet Sixteen. You can quilt along with me on your domestic machine or even your long-arm machine.

You could decide to paint each block with Lumiere acrylic fabric paints, or work them with a pieced background and appliqué each flower. You may like to work these designs in embroidery or colour the designs with INKtense Pencils. Maybe you just want to print out the designs and doodle into them with a pen, to practise the quilting patterns I demonstrate.
