The life of an adhesive bound book is decided by the quality of its spine preparation. As hotmelt adhesives work by surface bonding, larger the surface area for bonding, the better.
Milling is a process of cutting through the paper, releasing as many paper fibers as possible.
Brushing removes lose fibers.
Notching provides either v or regular shaped depressions on the book block into which an efficient gluing system can push adhesives. Depth and gaps between the notches influences the binding strength as well as open-ability of the book. Low notching and higher distances between them may result in books falling apart easily. On the other hand, too deep notches, in high frequency could lead to poor opening.
