Employed in the food and beverage service industry for over 20 years, Somashekar lost his job to the pandemic. Sole breadwinner and provider to his family including his aged parents, the job loss was a hard blow. However, encouraged by his wife, Kalavathi, and the counsel of neighbours and relatives, he has opened a tiny eatery in a room in his home, serving homemade breakfast and lunch. A family operation, with Kalavathi cooking and Somashekar cleaning, serving and assisting his wife, Sri Lakshmi Om Sai Upahara is an inspiring story of hope and possibilities even in current difficult times.

Along with my friend, Sushil Dwarkanath, who alerted me of this family’s plight, I visited this couple to encourage this enterprise and also taste some of their delicious vegetarian home cooked fare, including an enjoyable thatte idli served with two zesty chutneys.
