The story involves a mission to hunt down and kill some evil madman named Midan, who has built a secret bunker below the surface of the planet. You're job is to locate it and assassinate him; you can see the rest of the back-story in the introduction.

This game was released at the height of the Amiga's popularity by one of the best-loved developers of the time. Unfortunately, I think this turned out to be a real misfire.

I'd never played this before recording the video and boy, was I in for a shock.

I know that as a rule of thumb, the games of yesterday were much harder than those we play today. Assassin transcends the mere concept of "difficulty" and approaches something more akin to "brutality". Much of the difficulty can be attributed to the paltry amount of health the main character has and the fact that regular enemies drain so much of it. There's a whole host of other problems, including enemies popping into existence right next to you, but I'm far too spent having recorded the thing to rage about it here; by the time I got to level 4 with those randomly spawning grenades I'd given up the will to live.

The fact this is so hard is a real shame as there are many things to like about the game. The graphics are good and there's some great animation, especially when it comes to climbing up walls and swinging from the ceiling. The boomerang main-weapon is also an interesting touch, although it does contribute to the difficulty.

Team 17 re-released this in 1994 under the title Assassin - Special Edition, removing the whole of the first level and replacing the boomerang for a more conventional laser gun that shoots horizontally; I'd like to think they toned down the difficulty too and fixed some of the bugs too.
