Audie Murphy

He was just 19 years old. Small, quiet, and barely over 5 feet tall. But what Audie Murphy did on January 26, 1945, near Holtzwihr, France, made him a legend.

His unit was ambushed by six German tanks and waves of infantry. The Americans were outgunned, outnumbered, and out of options. Murphy ordered his men to retreat… but he stayed behind.

He climbed onto a burning tank destroyer, manned its .50 caliber machine gun, and fought alone for over an hour. Bullets ripped past him. Shells exploded around him. He was wounded, bleeding—but never stopped firing.

When it was over, he’d killed or wounded dozens of German soldiers. And somehow—he survived.

Audie Murphy became the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II, receiving 33 awards and medals, including the Medal of Honor.

A boy soldier. A lone warrior. A name history will never forget.
