Zigbee Is A Con And The Industry Is Lying To You

Everything you need to know about the great Zigbee con! When all factors are considered Wifi is a better Smart Home protocol than Zigbee, and I can prove it. Hear me out!!!... I honestly believe that Zigbee is a nominally better protocol on a TECHNICAL LEVEL, BUT the industry giants took this and not only blew it out of proportion to sell it to you, but they also started a whole bunch of myths about Wifi that I am going to prove to be false. This is an indepth analysis of everything from price, to signal range, to electricity usage, right down to the myth that Wifi routers can't handle more than 20 smart home devices. At current pricing Wifi is actually a MUCH better option than Zigbee when building a smart home.

There are 38 smart home devices in use during my testing and I conducted pathpings, speedtests and constant pings to a source outside my network with a buffer size of 30000 bytes and with a packet loss of 0% for 2 full days. During testing I set every TV in the house to stream simultaneously from different sources to watch for any actual performance degradation and there was no impact to Plex, Youtube or Netflix. They all performed flawlessly on each separate machine and Netflix was running wirelessly at the furthest point of the house.

Before anyone throws the "Zigbee is a mesh protocol" argument at me, my range test was conducted with a Philips Hue lamp placed at the same location as my Wifi repeater and my Wifi plug socket still went further than my Hue bulb. Zigbee's Mesh benefits have been WILDLY exaggerated by people trying to sell you on a product that has practically no advantages.

The Mesh discussion is a poor argument regardless because it only works if you aren't mixing manufacturers; my Hue lamp for example cannot act as a mesh repeater for any of my 3rd party Zigbee products and vice versa. Finally; I tested the range with and without repeaters and the Wifi socket won in both tests. Why would I want a Mesh Zigbee network when I can just buy a Wifi repeater have no Wifi deadspots?

If you're about to say "Yes but you have to buy a REALLY expensive router", then please see the following Spreadsheet: http://bit.ly/zigbeeversuswifi , I've done the math and once you breach more than 20 of the VERY CHEAPEST Zigbee devices you will have still wasted enough money to easily buy the full Ubiquiti Wifi Mesh System with both repeaters! This will give you the added bonus of no Wifi dead spots in the house and secure VPN access to your Home Network from anywhere in the world: . Before anyone calls me a sell-out, you don't HAVE to buy this router specifically, there are lots of options out there, I just wanted all the extra functionality that the Ubiquiti brings.

If you don't have more than 20 Wireless devices then you aren't likely to require the router purchase in the first place and Zigbee loses the price battle by a far greater degree. If you throw any major Zigbee suppliers into the mix instead of using the cheapest Zigbee options then the price difference is astronomical.

If you think Zigbee manufacturers such as Philips are a more reputable than any of the Wifi manufacturers then just remember that Philips are about to pull Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT from their earliest supporters, don't just take my word for it though, get it from the horses mouth: https://www2.meethue.com/en-gb/support/end-of-support-policy

If you think Zigbee is more secure than Wifi then I challenge you to find a reputable newspaper article where someone's Smart Home device has been hacked and used against them. Please don't forget to explain the actual impact this had on their lives. Some figures around the number of people impacted each year probably won't help your cause either but I'd like to insist you include them ;)
