India’s Game-Changing Satellite: Mission Drishti Explained | World’s First Hybrid Eye in Space

India just made history in Earth observation! On May 3, 2026, Bengaluru-based startup GalaxEye successfully launched Mission Drishti, the world’s first OptoSAR satellite, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from California. At ~190 kg, it is also India’s largest privately built Earth observation satellite.

What makes Drishti revolutionary?
Traditional satellites force a compromise: Optical cameras give beautiful, intuitive color images, but fail under clouds, smoke, or at night.
SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) sees through weather and darkness, but the images are complex and harder to interpret.

Drishti’s SyncFused OptoSAR payload combines both sensors on a single platform, capturing data simultaneously from the same angle. This delivers fused imagery at ~1.8 m resolution (range 1.2–3.6 m) that is analysis-ready, all-weather, day-and-night. No more alignment headaches from merging separate satellites!

Key Specs: Orbit: 500 km Sun-Synchronous LEO
Revisit: Every 4 days
SAR: X-band, up to 0.9 m in spotlight mode
Multispectral Optical: 7 bands (RGB, NIR, Coastal Blue, Red Edge)
Onboard AI: Edge processing (NVIDIA Jetson) for faster insights
Mission Life: 4–5 years

Why This Matters Globally & for India:
Drishti strengthens defense and border monitoring, transforms precision agriculture (crop health, soil moisture), improves disaster response (floods, wildfires), enhances urban planning, insurance, and climate tracking. PM Narendra Modi praised it as a major milestone for India’s space journey and youth innovation.

GalaxEye (IIT Madras alumni-led) is already planning a constellation for better coverage. This launch proves India’s private space sector is ready to compete on the world stage, reducing reliance on foreign data providers and opening export opportunities. From startup dreams to orbit in record time, this is Aatmanirbhar Bharat meeting cutting-edge tech.
