Link's Upsmash in Smash 64, an example of an arbitrary nerf

Link was nerfed in the transition from Japanese DSB to American SSB.
One of his nerfed moves is Upsmash (8%+4%+12%) → (7%+3%+12%)
The second hit doesn't deal enough shieldstun, so the third hit can be escaped within a 2-frame window for characters with Invincible UpB on the 1st frame like Pikachu, DK and Samus, on the other hand, Mario and Luigi can also challenge it with their UpBs with invincibility frames but they only have 1-frame window so they must be frame perfect or as else they will get hit.
This, and the other nerfs also affects the European Link.

This nerf, along with his nerfed Dair disables him from doing many shield break options, reducing his overall ability to pressure the enemy shield.
So moves like Uptilt which were positive for Link on block, are either negative, even or slightly less positive on block, depending if the first, second, or the later hitboxes hit the enemy shield.

And also he can't convert this true shield break combo against a frame perfect AI in shield break mode where as Japanese Link can do it.
With the American shield stun formula, the 2nd hit is lacking two frames of shieldstun to make it into a true followup on shield.

With Japanese Shield Stun formula, the 2nd hit is off by 1-frame, still not enough to prevent a frame perfect escape OOS.
It only takes 1% additional damage for the second hit to convert as intended.
This wast mostly left due to poor testing and the result of arbitrarily nerfing a character that didn't need to be nerfed.
