How to select crossover point on a compression driver

Here I show how to select the best crossover point for your compression driver for the best sound quality. I look at all the aspects that influence the sound quality and demonstrate by playing female vocals at the various crossover points to get a sense of the sound difference.
This video the beginning of a narrative on how to effectively expand the bandwidth of a modern compression driver for audiophile use. I will be looking at ways to lower the fundamental resonance by modifying certain parts of the driver. It won’t be this driver though. I have the DE400TN that I will be working with. It has the same specifications except it uses a Neodymium magnet instead of ceramic. It’s been my experience that the Neo sounds subjectively better so I will start with this driver. Lowering the fundamental resonance will also lower the sensitivity, and lower the power handling since we are diving into lower frequencies. However since we are using this in an audiophile application these are acceptable trade offs in order to get extension down to my target of 600Hz. I chose 600Hz because this is the lower cutoff for my ES600 Biradial horn that I’ve developed that I plan to pit head to head against the classic Yuichi style horn, which I will also be building for comparison. So yes, there’s certainly a lot ahead for this series of videos so stayed tuned!
